Spend 2 nights in Inverness, the Capital of the Scottish Highlands. On your own, using the included 1 day hop-on hop-off bus pass, see the sights of the charming city of Inverness. Like most Scottish towns, Inverness is filled with friendly people and has traditional music and very good shopping.Day 3 - Jacobite Steam Train then Over the Sea to Skye & Portree
Today will begin with a drive to Fort William to board the Jacobite Steam Train (the Hogwarts Express from Harry Potter). Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 42 mile trip takes you across the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct which overlooks the Jacobite monument. Then we’ll take the ferry (weather permitting) "Over the Sea to Skye". We’ll travel on to the colorful town of Portree where you can take pictures of the colorful buildings and maybe get in a bit of shopping. You will spend 2 nights on magical Isle of Skye. Overnight: Hotel in Portree, Isle of SkyeDay 4 - Isle of Skye - Trotternish Peninsula, Fairy Glen, Dunvegan Castle & Island on the Edge
You will have one full day on the Isle of Skye to enjoy it's many enticing delights. This will be a delightful morning of touring the Trotternish Peninsula including photostops at Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and the breathtaking view from the Quiraing. From there we’ll drive through the lovely hills leading to the ferry port of Uig with a stop at the magical Fairy Glen. After lunch in Portree, you will visit Dunvegan Castle and see it's unusual gardens. This will be followed by a visit to the shop at "Island on the Edge" which provides a rare glimpse into the island's traditional culture and beautiful handcrafted items. Then you’ll return to Portree for the night. Overnight: Hotel in Portree, Isle of SkyeDay 5 - Eilean Donan, Fort William, Glencoe, Drummond Castle & Gardens
To start the day, you will visit one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, Eilean Donan Castle. It was partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, but after 200 years (and then 20 years of toil and labour) it was restored to its former glory and re-opened in 1932. After a stop in Fort William for lunch, you will get to see the sweeping hills and valleys of Glencoe which is featured in the opening credits of Outlander. There will be time for photo stops so you can get out of the van and actually experience this most gorgeous location. The final stop for the day will be Drummond Castle & Gardens. The gardens are immediately recognizable as the film location of Versailles. (See if you can find the location where Jamie and Murtagh were practicing their sword skills.) Overnight: Hotel in StirlingDay 6 - Wardpark Studios (drive by), Cumbernauld Glen, Dunure Harbour, Dean Castle Country Park, (optional Stirling Castle)
On this day you'll get a glimpse of the Wardpark Film Studios where the filming for Outlander is produced (as we drive by the locked compound). Then the actual first stop of the day will be be at the site where scenes for Fraser's Ridge were filmed and you'll enjoy a walk through the ancient and mature oak woodlands of Cumbernauld Glen. Both the woods around Jamie and Claire's cabin, and the bear fight were filmed here. For those who love a walk on the wild side, Cumbernauld Glen is also a haven for wildlife. Early spring sees pockets of snowdrops appearing and summer brings a profusion of bluebells. The next destination is Dunure which is on the lovely coast of Scotland. This is where filming for the Season 3 harbor scenes took place when they were getting ready to sail to the Caribbean as well as the conversation with Jared. (This is also the site from Season 4 where Bree and Lizzie were walking around the harbor.) The beach and castle next to the harbor were used for the scenes in Season 3 where Claire and Jamie watch young Ian swim out to Silkies’ Island. Then you will visit Dean Castle Country Park which stands in for the home of Lord Lovat, Beaufort Castle. This is where Claire and Jamie went to try to persuade the Old Fox to send his clan to aid Charles Stuart. The final stop of the day will be an optional visit to Stirling Castle. Overnight: Hotel in StirlingDay 7 - The TV location of 'the Mill', Rosslyn Chapel, Wilmington, Glencorse Old Kirk, the Duke's kitchen
Today we will start with one of the most remembered scenes in outlander - "the Mill" where Jamie dove in the frigid water to free the stuck wheel. The filming was done at the picturesque Preston Mill – one of the oldest, working, water-driven meal mills in Scotland. After searching around for Jamie's clothes, you'll stop for a visit at Rosslyn Chapel (as long as we're in the neighborhood and it is such a not to be missed site). Then we'll journey to one of the filming sites of Wilmington and see the location where Jamie and Claire went to see a play, and then Claire performed emergency surgery. The filming was done at Arniston House which has historical links to Rosslyn Chapel and Culloden, as the family was eventually instrumental in getting the tartan act repealed. After a special lunch at Arniston, you'll get to visit the beautiful church where Jamie and Claire's iconic wedding took place. You can stand in the exact spot where Claire learned Jamie's full name. Next will be Callendar House, which was used as Bellhurst Manor, and the authentic Georgian working kitchen was that of the Duke of Sandringham ("Off with your head!"). Overnight: Hotel in StirlingDay 8 - Film Locations for the Witches Trial, Mohawk Village, and a Distillery
Our first stop will be Tibbermore Church to visit the site of the Witches Trial and stand in the same pulpit where Claire and Gellis faced the angry crowd. After having some fun there we'll travel on to the Faskally Forest which was used as the filming site for the Mohawk Village in season 4. This is where the bark hut and thatched building were set up and you'll get to tromp around in the woods trying to find Roger. (really, I have to say it: "Where's Roger?" Did Diana Gabaldon do that on purpose?) Then you'll have a nice Scottish lunch at the Gloagburn Farm Shop where you can get locally grown food and maybe some souveniers. From there you'll head up north and stop at the distinctive Dalwhinnie Distillery for a tour and possibly a wee dram. The day will end with a drive along the Cairngorms National Park on your way towards Inverness. Overnight: B&B/Hotel in InvernessHugh Allison and I have worked together to design this tour and we will strive to see all of the places in the list above but they are subject to change dependent on weather and availability and what we may see in upcoming episodes.
